Sunset Cliffs Trunk Sewer

Project Updates

Background

The existing 15-inch vitrified clay (VC) pipe was originally installed in 1948. Most of the existing pipe has reached its useful design life and must be replaced with new upsized pipe, to meet current design standards.

The Sunset Cliffs Trunk Sewer project will upgrade the capacity of the trunk sewer to meet anticipated future peak flows and bring the sewer system up to current design standards, while complying with EPA environmental requirements and mandates.

Project Overview

The Sunset Cliffs Trunk Sewer project consists of replacing 6,660 linear feet (1.3 miles) of existing 15-inch VC sewer with new 18-inch and 21-inch polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes, and concrete encased vitrified clay (VC) pipes. The project also consists of rehabilitating 1,070 linear feet of existing 15-inch VC sewer (0.2 miles), the installation of new curb ramps along the project site area per ADA standards, and other road improvements. The project is located as follows:

Please see the project's location map for further reference.

Schedule

The project is scheduled to start construction in September 2010 and complete in December 2011.

A construction summer moratorium will be observed from May 2011 to September 2011, except on Del Mar Avenue.

Cost

The total cost for this project is approximately $4 million. This amount includes the design, environmental studies, construction, inspection, and permits fees. The construction cost is estimated at $2.8 million.

Additional Information

MTS Bus Routes 35 (to and from Old Town) and 923 (to and from downtown San Diego) will be relocated from Cable Street to Sunset Cliffs Boulevard while Cable Street is closed. These routes will serve the stop at 30-minute frequencies between the hours of approximately 5:30 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. on weekdays and for fewer hours on Saturdays and Sundays.

A temporary bus stop will also be installed on Sunset Cliffs Boulevard adjacent to the Crestview Terrace Apartments at the Coronado Avenue intersection. This bus stop is expected to be in use from October 6, 2010 until mid-2011.

Please visit MTS for specific rerouting information and timetables.

Project Updates

3/03/11 - The Ocean Beach Planning Group has approved construction work only on Del Mar Avenue through the summer moratorium in efforts to expedite the completion of the project while minimizing impacts to businesses and residents in the area.

1/27/11 - Construction work on Cable Street and Del Mar Avenue is scheduled to complete by the beginning of the construction summer moratorium in May 2011. The project will resume in September 2011 and complete work on Sunset Cliffs Boulevard from Del Mar Avenue to Point Loma Avenue.

11/3/10 - Due to the unforeseen recent rainfall in San Diego and temporary delays in the delivery of materials, construction of the Sunset Cliffs Trunk Sewer replacement project has been suspended temporarily. The delivery of the pipes needed to continue the project is estimated to arrive November 12th, which will allow crews to resume work immediately. Project staff would like to reassure residents and stakeholders that expediting and completing this important infrastructure improvement project is a top priority.
