Prior to 1998, Caltrans condemned land in Southeast San Diego for installation of the Route 252 Freeway. Caltrans did not complete the project and the land reverted to the City. In November 1998, The City Council authorized a Cooperation Agreement by and between the Redevelopment Agency of the City of San Diego and the City of San Diego providing for the acquisition and development of the park site.
In April of 2000, the City acquired the property (approx. 8.5 acres) for Phase I and II. In March of 2005, the City completed the Chollas Creek Enhancement, Segment 8, on the Phase II park site. In May of 2006, Dorothy Petway Neighborhood Park (Rt. 252 Corridor Park, Phase I) was completed and opened to the public. In July of 2008, the pedestrian bridge over Chollas Creek was completed linking Petway Park and Phase II park site. In October of 2008, the City accepted $1.6 million in redevelopment funds for the design and construction of Phase II.
The Park is approximately 5.8 acres. A portion of the site, approximately 3.8 acres, was developed as Chollas Creek enhancement / re-vegetation area. It has reestablished native creek-side vegetation and has walking trails and benches for neighborhood use.
The remainder of the site, approximately 2.0 acres, will be developed for more active park uses, and may include security lighting, picnic areas, children’s play areas, walkways/trails, fencing, an amphitheatre, benches, half basketball court, and other various site furnishings and amenities.
By current City park standards Southeastern San Diego has a useable park deficit of 155.38 acres. This project will provide for 5.8 acres of developed park land for the Southcrest Neighborhood.
Completion of design: Winter 2012
Open to the public: Autumn 2013
Total estimated project cost: $1.6 Million
