Ted Williams Parkway Pedestrian Bridge at Shoal Creek Drive

Background

The proposed project consists of constructing a pedestrian bridge over Ted Williams Parkway at Shoal Creek Drive. Ted Williams Parkway, between I-15 and Highland Ranch Road, is a 6-lane primary arterial with an average daily traffic volume of over 25,000 trips. The posted speed is 55 mph and a reduced speed of 25 mph near Shoal Creek Elementary School. The proposed pedestrian bridge would facilitate crossing of the intersection, especially by children attending the adjacent Shoal Creek Elementary School near the southeast corner of the Ted Williams/Shoal Creek intersection. Many school children living in the surrounding neighborhood currently cross Ted Williams Parkway twice each day on their way to and from this school. Several accidents have occurred, prompting community concerns and vehicle congestion in the area due to parents driving their children to school rather than allowing them to cross at this intersection. The proposed pedestrian bridge would address the community concerns and provide an alternative for the school children and other pedestrians and bicyclists to cross Ted Williams Parkway. The project is also expected to reduce this school-related vehicle congestion.

Description

The City of San Diego plans to construct a pedestrian bridge over Ted Williams Parkway (TWP), a six-lane arterial road at Shoal Creek Drive in Carmel Mountain Ranch for pedestrians and bicyclists. The bridge will replace the at-grade crossings on Ted Williams Parkway.

Benefits

The project will provide an alternative for the community to cross Ted Williams Parkway at Shoal Creek Drive and access the elementary school.

Cost

The project estimate is $4,500,000. The current funds allocated to the project are approximately $2,020,000 in federal funds, and $296,000 of local funds. The remaining funds have not yet been identified and are being sought.

Schedule

Construction start is scheduled for late 2010, if funding becomes available. Project completion is estimated to take one year after construction starts.
