Water Main Replacement Project 555
Water Group Job 905CI (revised March 18, 2009)

Project Location

Encanto and Southeastern San Diego areas

Project Description and Purpose

The City of San Diego is replacing approximately 1 mile of water mains in the Encanto and Southeastern San Diego areas with new durable plastic pipes. The existing 8, 12 and 16-inch diameter cast iron mains were originally installed as early as 1950 and are nearing the end of their service life.

The purpose of the project is to reduce maintenance needs, increase the size of existing pipes to better serve the area, improve service reliability and minimize future water main breaks caused by aging pipes. The estimated project cost is $1.8 million and is included as part of the Water Department's ongoing capital improvement projects.

Construction Information

The old pipelines are located under several residential and commercial streets. Contractors will conduct the replacement work in various stages. This process avoids work from occurring on all streets at the same time. Look for updates on the anticipated work schedule and locations in the project newsletters and on this Web site.

Work Schedule - Updated late September, 2008, schedule subject to change

Water Group Job 905CI (Encanto area)
Work completed

Water Group Job 905CI (Southeastern San Diego area – now includes 36th Street between National Ave. and Acadia Grove Way)
October 2008 – June 2009

Normal work hours: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Construction crews will first install temporary water lines called "highlines." These temporary above-ground pipes will allow for continued water service to properties during the water main replacement. After the highlines are in place, the crews will dig trenches to remove and replace the water pipeline.

Most work in the area is completed, however a small segment of work began in mid-January along 36th Street, between National Avenue and Acacia Grove Way. The estimated completion date for this work is June 2009.

All repaving work will occur in June or July 2009.

Hours may extend to handle any unforeseen circumstances or to avoid heavy traffic periods around major intersections.
