The City of San Diego's Environmental Services Department (ESD)
is entrusted with providing high quality solid waste disposal services
for the citizens of San Diego and the greater San Diego metropolitan
area. We are dedicated to carrying out this responsibility in a
manner that demonstrates true leadership in environmental management
while continuing to provide the highest level of service.
Background
In March 2002, the ESD, along with thirteen other government agencies,
concluded participation in a 24-month, U.S. EPA sponsored, "Initiative
for Government Entities" pilot project. This project was designed
to allow each participant to develop an Environmental Management
System (EMS) and be in position for certification of their EMS to
the ISO 14001 standard at the conclusion of the project.
What is an EMS?
An EMS is a set of management processes and procedures that allow an
organization to analyze, manage and reduce the environmental impact
of its activities, products and services and operate with greater
efficiency and control.
ISO 14001 is an internationally accepted standard that defines
the key elements for establishing and operating an EMS. This standard
recognizes that organizations can be concerned about both their
own profitability and managing environmental impacts. The International
Organization of Standardization is a worldwide federation of national
standards bodies which developed this standard. For more information
on this subject, click on the "What is ISO 14001?" link
