EPA Certified Renovator Training
Effective April 22, 2010, contractors who perform home improvement activity in housing built prior to 1978 and any child occupied facility must be certified in accordance with the new EPA Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) rule.
Complete the below two steps to obtain your EPA Certification. You do not have to complete either step prior to starting the other:
- You need to become an EPA Certified Firm by applying for an EPA certification. Visit the EPA website to obtain your application. Complete and submit your application to the EPA with the appropriate fee ($300). EPA has up to 90 days to process your application.
- Each EPA certified Firm must assign an EPA Certified Renovator to each project. Certified Renovators are typically lead persons and supervisors. They are required to be present during setup and tear down, and clean-up activities, and are required to train other workers on how to safely conduct work. They are responsible for record keeping and ensuring the work is done in a lead safe manner and in accordance with regulations. To become a Certified Renovator, you must take a full day eight-hour EPA Certified Renovator Training Course and pass the test administered at the end of the training. You will receive your EPA Certified Renovator certification in the mail in one to two weeks.
All trainings, course materials, and tests currently provided by the Lead Safety and Healthy Homes Program are in English only. These courses are only approved for purposes of certification under Section 402 of the TSCA.
To Register for Initial Training Classes
Mail the completed registration form to the address on the form with a payment check in the amount of $135 payable to City Treasurer. You will receive your class confirmation after we have received your check and completed registration form.
DO NOT show up for any class unless you have received an enrollment confirmation.

Initial Renovator Training:

Initial: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with one-hour lunch break
Refresher Renovator Training
- There are currently no Refresher Renovator Trainings scheduled. Our goal is to meet the needs of the San Diego Community. Submit your Refresher Training Registration form (refresher) to be notified of the next available class. By submitting this form, we will have a better understanding of how many courses need to be held to meet this need.
To Register for Refresher Training Classes
Proof of successfully completion an approved training courses must be provided in order to register for Refresher trainings. Mail the completed registration form with proof of successful completion an approved training course and a payment check for $95 payable to City Treasurer to the address on the form. Checks will only be deposited after your scheduled training is confirmed. DO NOT show up for any class unless you have received an enrollment confirmation.
Enrollment is on a first come, first serve basis, based on receipt of payment, the completed registration form and proof of successful completion an approved training courses (if applicable). Be sure to provide the required information or you will not be registered. We will contact you shortly after receipt of this material and confirm your registration.
If classes are already full and you are unable to attend a specific scheduled training, you will be given priority for the next available class. Persons who have submitted their registration forms with payment will be notified immediately of future classes when they become available.
All cancellations must in writing and received in our offices by mail or e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org at least 5 full working days (Monday-Friday not including Holidays) prior to class in order to receive a refund. The sender is responsible for assuring receipt of all cancellation notices.
After registered persons have been given the opportunity to confirm their participation in new classes, we will update the website and notify everyone on the Contractor Distribution List of the newly scheduled classes via e-mail. To be included on the Contractor Distribution List, send you name and e-mail address to Lead Safety and request to be added to this list.
