Appliance Recycling

The Metallic Discards Act of 1991 banned major appliances such as refrigerators, water heaters, washers, dryers, and air conditioners from landfill disposal and required them to be recycled for their metal content. This Act was recently amended to improve compliance with regulations for proper removal of hazardous materials from the appliances prior to recycling the metal. These hazardous materials include mercury containing switches and temperature control devices, oils, PCB capacitors, and refrigerants.

Anyone removing hazardous materials from appliances must be certified by the California Department of Toxic Substances Control. Recycling appliances saves valuable landfill space, protects the environment, and preserves natural resources. If your old appliance is working or needs only minor repairs, consider donating it to a local thrift store or charity. The Miramar Recycling Center will accept your old appliance and properly recycle the hazardous materials and the appliance. Fees may apply.
