Why are we working on a Climate Mitigation and Adaptation Plan?
The 2004 Climate Action Plan tracked greenhouse gas emissions from city operations and the community in three broad areas: Power (gas and electricity); Transportation; and Waste. The list of mitigation options were primarily focused on City operations. It is the goal of the 2011 CMAP to provide options for both city operations and the community to reduce (mitigate) greenhouse gas emissions and to begin to evaluate vulnerabilities in the community and outline adaptation strategies.
Why does a local government care about climate change? It is our responsibility to plan for the future of this region, and to identify and address the risks associated with a variety of natural disasters. A changing climate may result in a number of vulnerabilities, as listed in the San Diego Foundation's 2050 Regional Report, and the City is evaluating what the best response will be.
What is the Environmental and Economic Sustainability Task Force
The Environmental and Economic Sustainability Task Force (EESTF) was established by the City Council in October 2010 as an independent advisory body to work with City staff on the development of the 2011 Climate Mitigation and Adaptation Plan (CMAP). The CMAP is an approved project funded by the U.S. Department of Energy through the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG), and the Calif. Public Utilities Commission Local Government Partnership between the City of San Diego and San Diego Gas and Electric.
Who are the members of the EESTF?
The Task Force is comprised of members selected by each Council District and the Mayor's Office. Collectively, they have a broad set of experience and expertise.
