Summer 2005 Events:Minor Construction Mini-Mentoring Program A unique partnership program between the City of San Diego’s Minor Construction Program and the Engineering and General Contractors Association (EGCA) began in FY 2003, continuing in FY2004. The partners’ goal was to increase the competitiveness and knowledge and facilitate the growth of small business contractors registered with the Minor Construction Program to the benefit of the profession and the City of San Diego’s general contracting pool. Training workshops lead by experienced EGCA contractors, were offered for a minimal cost covering areas from project initiation to project closeout. These workshops were very successful and well attended. In FY2006, the City and EGCA, has added a new partner to the team, Southwestern College Small Business Development & International Trade Institute. With this new partner, the Mini-Mentoring program will offer business as well as construction classes, mentoring and networking opportunities. The class size is being kept small (15 and under) to allow for "hands-on" assistance. Firms will undergo an initial evaluation continuing with interim and final evaluations to determine progress and growth. The session begins with a discussion of the "Differences between Public Agency and Private Contracting" given by Mike Arme, President of EGCA on June 22, 2005 at a ‘kick-off’ event held at the Black Contractors Association. One Stop Centers The City is working hard to pull those resources together to make it easier for you to receive the small business assistance you need. One of the first stops for small businesses is the City’s Office of Small Business which was established to offer advice on starting a business, growing a business, business problem resolution, financial and loan information, and ombudsperson services. Another specialized assistance area is the Minor Construction program which was structured to assist small and emerging construction contractors in gaining expertise and growing their capacity. The program offers projects $250,000 and under which can be bid on only by registered small and emerging contractors. The program also offers a contractors assistance program in partnership with the Engineering and General Contractors Association. The City’s upcoming One Stop Center will add to these programs by bringing training, guest business speakers, networking, and staff available to provide ready access and answers about City of San Diego opportunities and resources. The One Stop Center will have City staff helping in the communities at a location to be announced soon. This program is guaranteed to help you start your business or get it “kicked-up” to the next step!
