Major Fires and Incidents

1981 - First Sixth-Alarm Fire

San Diego's first sixth-alarm fire was at a La Jolla condominium complex, where a tar pot overturned inside the building. The call was delayed because workers tried to put out the fire by beating it with their shirts. Twenty-one engines and seven truck companies responded to the fire. Losses were estimated at $5 million.
