Fire Chief Tracy Jarman

Photo of Fire Chief Tracy Jarman Tracy Jarman was appointed Fire Chief for the City of San Diego on June 26, 2006. Since joining the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department as a fire fighter in 1984, she progressed up through the ranks of the Department and became the Assistant Fire Chief in May 2003. As the Assistant Fire Chief, Jarman was responsible for Logistics areas of the Department for all Fire, Emergency Medical and Lifeguard Services, including Personnel, Budget, Fleet, Facilities, Fire Prevention, Dispatch, and Information Technology Services. Prior to being appointed Assistant Chief, she served as Deputy Chief overseeing the 911 Fire and Emergency Medical Services Dispatch Center for five years.

As Chief, Jarman administers a staff of 928 firefighters, 124 lifeguards, 85 uniformed positions in Emergency Medical Services, 121 civilian personnel, and oversees a budget of $181 million. Of the 34 female fire chiefs in the United States, Chief Jarman runs the second largest department. Her salary is approximately $165,000.

Chief Jarman's other professional accomplishments include responding as a member of the countywide Hazardous Material Incident Response Team (HIRT) and San Diego's Urban Search and Rescue Team, Task Force 8; she was recently appointed to FEMA Region IX's Advisory Committee and the Governor's Blue Ribbon Task Force.

Jarman is also a trustee on a number of boards of directors, including San Diego Medical Services Enterprise, the Burn Institute, Family Justice Center and StarPal.

Chief Jarman holds a Fire Science Degree from Miramar College, a Bachelors Degree in Biology and a Masters Degree in Public Administration from San Diego State University. She is also certified by the State of California as a Fire Officer and a Hazardous Materials Specialist.
