Camp Nimitz is part of the former Naval Training Center-San Diego. The Naval Training Center was transferred from the US Navy to the City of San Diego in the Summer of 2000 as part of nationwide military base closings.

The Training & Safety Division Facility houses a state of the art computerized fire simulator built for the US Navy in 1993. Originally designed for shipboard firefighting exercises, it has been modified to include structural firefighting scenarios.

The Training & Safety Facility includes:

  • A drill ground
  • A confined space training site
  • A hazardous materials training site including tank railroad cars and overturned tanker trailers

Camp Nimitz is also home to:

  • The Federal Emergency Management Administration's California Urban Search and Rescue Task Force 8
  • The Miramar College Fire Technology and Emergency Medical Technician programs
