Emergency Medical Technician

Since taking over the City's 9-1-1 medical emergency system through San Diego Medical Services Enterprise, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department has added the job classification of "Emergency Medical Technician." This is what is called a "single role" position which means the EMT works solely in the EMS program and is not a firefighter.

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) works as a member of an emergency medical team. The EMT administers first-aid treatment and assists paramedics and other emergency medical service personnel in providing emergency and non-emergency patient care to sick or injured people.

The EMT also may drive emergency vehicles to and from emergency and non-emergency situations and transport patients to hospitals or other medical care facilities.

Examples of Emergency Medical Technicians Duties:

  • Assists paramedics and other emergency medical service personnel in providing emergency and non-emergency medical and health care.
  • Responds to instructions from the emergency medical dispatcher and drives ambulance or other emergency vehicle to the emergency or non-emergency incident.
  • Monitors communications equipment to maintain contact with dispatcher.
  • Communicates with professional medical personnel at a hospital to get instructions regarding further treatment and to arrange for the victim's arrival at the hospital.
  • Administers prescribed first-aid treatment at the site of an emergency, or in a specially equipped vehicle. This could include treatments such as applying splints, administering oxygen, treatint minor wounds or abrasions, or administering artificial resuscitation.
  • Removes or assists in removal of victims from the incident scene or catastrophe.
  • Transports patients to hospitals or other emergency care facilities.
  • Assists in removal of victims from vehicle and transfer of victims to the hospital.
  • Assists receiving facility to obtain and record information related to victims' vital statistics and circumstances of the emergency.
  • Maintains vehicles and medical and communication equipment and replenishes first aid and medical equipment supplies.
  • May assist professional medical personnel in emergency treatment administered at medical facility.
  • Cleans and maintains patient care compartment of ambulances.
  • Prepares reports of incidents for billing and other record keeping purposes.
  • Performs other related emergency medical support duties.

Minimum Qualifications for Emergency Medical Technician:

  • A current valid Emergency Medical Technician Certificate issued by the State of California or by an EMT certifying agency approved by the State of California; County of San Diego EMT System ID Card; Certificate for Basic Life Support for the Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiac Provider.
     
  • A valid California Class C Driver's License.
     
  • A valid California Ambulance Driver's Certificate.
