Fire/Rescue Vessels
The San Diego Lifeguard Service operates two 32' Fire/Rescue Vessels.
Each has the ability to pump approximately 1,000 gallons of seawater per
minute using either a bow mounted monitor or by connecting fire hose to
the deck mounted stand pipes. These vessels are also capable of pumping
300 gallons per minute out of sinking vessels. These two vessels, named
the "Alert" and the "Trident" are particularly well
equipped to search for vessels lost in the fog. Using Automatic Direction
Finders (ADF) which allow the rescuing vessel to home in on distress signals,
Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) tracking equipment, and radar, lifeguards
are able to successfully complete rescue missions even in dense fog. Both
of these vessels are fully equipped with self contained breathing apparatus
(SCBA) for entering into smoke filled environments, scuba for underwater
search and rescue, and medical equipment to assist with boating accidents.
San Diego Lifeguards will again be hosting a Marine Firefighting class
for the California Department of Boating and Waterways this Fall. This
course is open to Peace Officers and Boating Safety Officers who reside
in California.
