* Swim Times are for 100 yards in a swimming pool.
TRYOUTSNew students must successfully complete the swim test. However to secure a position, new students need to submit registration and payment by the suggested dates. (Acceptance is based on successful completion of the swim test and a full refund is given should your child fail that test.) We hold our tryouts at various San Diego Pools. The dates and locations of the tryouts are listed below. Tryouts are anytime between 9:00 am and 12:00 noon. New students can attend as many tryouts as needed in order to pass the swim test. PROGRAM LOCATIONProgram headquarters is at the Santa Clara Recreation Center in Pacific Beach, 1008 Santa Clara Place, off Mission Boulevard. Most days are spent in and around the waters of Mission Bay and the ocean at Santa Clara Place. Throughout the program we will visit other City beaches to become aware of the opportunities and hazards that exist along San Diego's coast. PROGRAM CONTENTThe content of our Program will include ocean and beach safety, lifesaving techniques and procedures, first aid and CPR, development of swimming skills, body surfing, body boarding, surfing, snorkeling, kayaking, volleyball, other beach games, and competition events with other junior lifeguard programs. MISSION STATEMENTWe are a team of aquatic professionals, providing a fun and safe aquatic education to the youth of San Diego through Developing confidence, mental and physical fitness and respect for one another and the coastal environment. INSTRUCTIONOur Instructors are San Diego Lifeguards who have been chosen to work with the Junior Lifeguard Program based on their work history, lifeguarding experience and desire to work as a Junior Lifeguard Instructor. The Program is managed by a Lifeguard Coordinator, Lifeguard Sergeant, and a Lifeguard Lieutenant. SCHOLARSHIPS: Scholarships are available based on financial need. Qualified applicants may receive either a full or partial scholarship. Scholarships are available for only one session per child. If you wish your child to participate in both sessions, you will have to pay for the second session at a cost of $360.00 per child. UNIFORMSSan Diego Junior Lifeguards are required to wear a uniform during class. The uniforms consist of red shorts and swim suits with yellow silk-screened T-shirts. Swim fins are also required. We recommend the “Duck Feet” type made by Voit. Optional uniform items such as sweatshirts, hats, and rash guards will also be available for purchase. All uniforms items can be purchased online when you register to be picked up at a later date. Uniform items will be on display at the Tryouts. Please review our uniform policy below. All junior guards must be in proper uniform each day in order to participate in the program. No exceptions will be allowed. Available Uniform Items

Finally, all personal gear should be marked with your first and last name. The SDJG Program and Staff are not responsible for any lost uniforms items or personal property. (This information regarding our uniform policy will also be included in the Junior Lifeguard Field Training Guide to be handed out the second day of the session.) OPEN HOUSE (WILL NO LONGER BE HELD)This year the program managers have decided not to have an open house. Instead we will have weekly hours in the months before each session for families to pick up pre-paid items bought online or to purchase any uniform items. We will post these times on our website by May 1st. Open house was also a time for parents to check in and confirm which session and time they signed up for. Please double-check your registration form before you submit it online to make sure you are registered for the session you want. ONLINE REGISTRATIONOnline registration for 2008 is now closed. In order to streamline our business practices, and to save time and money, the preferred method for registration and payment is via online, however if this creates hardship or concern for any of our clients, please do not hesitate to call us at (858) 581-7861. Enrollment is limited. To assure your first choice of sessions we recommend that you register when it opens on April 1st. We will no longer be accepting any mail-in registration forms. We do expect the sessions to fill quickly this year. Payment will be due in full when you register and must be paid online. Please review our refund policy listed at the bottom of the page. If you are applying for a scholarship, you will not be required to pay online. You must still register online in order to save a space for your child/children. When online registration begins and scholarship applications are available, please review our guidelines for determining your chance of eligibility. You will be able to select this option instead of paying at the time of registration. Keep in mind that this option is meant for families who are in need of financial assistance. However, we MUST receive all application information by the deadlines to guarantee your child’s space in the program. Please send all scholarship information to us as soon as possible. Once our sessions are full we will begin a wait list. In order to get on our wait list you must email us at sdjuniorguards@sandiego.gov . Please do not leave wait list information on our voicemail. Any vacancies due to refunds, etc, will be filled on a first come, first serve basis, and will require payment in full at the time of registration. WAIVER FORMSDuring the online registration process please print the waiver and mail it with your Application ID number to: San Diego Junior Lifeguard Program

Enrollment is contingent upon receipt of your signed waiver form. No student will be allowed to participate in Junior Lifeguard activities without a complete waiver.
REFUND POLICY (Please note our refund policy has changed this year.)Refunds will ONLY be available for 30 days after the date of payment and registration. However, if you register during the month of May, refunds will be available for either 30 days or until June 1st, whichever comes first. A $50 processing fee will apply to all refunds.
