In an attempt to make your job as a teacher easier (particularly when teaching water safety) we have compiled the following list of training aids.
First, we have a lesson plan for you. It will take you about 30-45 minutes to get the children involved in water safety. We also have some graphics that you can turn into overhead transparencies or perhaps a handout. Finally, we have developed a crossword puzzle that you can print out. We hope you use them!
There are several low or no cost ways to get teaching aids for your students. Here is a list of some that are available, along with a short description.
The United States Lifesaving Association has a brand new website. It's packed with information about lifeguarding around the world but you can also find their Top Ten Safety Tips and a Teaching Guide for their tips.
The California Department of Boating and Waterways has several free handouts for California residents. The Aqua Smart program educates children about boating and water safety. Activity books are available for the younger crowd and videos are available for all ages. To request materials just indicate the number and age of your students and the school's mailing address (must be in California) and Email the information to pubinfo@dbw.ca.gov.
The United States Coast Guard has several coloring books that can either be downloaded and printed or viewed with the help of free adobe software.
