Central Library UpdateMore than three decades after a public library master plan deemed it necessary, the city of San Diego is at last constructing a new Central Library to serve as a hub for the 35-branch system, replacing the outdated, over-capacity Central Library on E Street downtown. The nine-story library was approved by the San Diego City Council in June 2010, and contractor Turner Construction broke ground on the project a month later. The new Central Library is funded through a combination of state, redevelopment and private funding. In addition, the San Diego Unified School District will lease two floors of expansion space for a charter high school. No money from the City's general fund will be used for the construction of the library.
