The Wastewater system is comprised of two components:
The Metropolitan Sewerage Sub-System treats the wastewater from the City of San Diego and 15 other cities and districts (called Participating Agencies) from a 450 square mile area with a population of over 2.2 million. An average of 180 million gallons of wastewater is treated every day of the year.
The Municipal Wastewater Collection Sub-System is responsible for the collection and conveyance of wastewater from residences and businesses in the City of San Diego, serving a 330 square mile area with a population of 1.2 million people.
