ISO 14001
The Treatment and Disposal Division of the Wastewater Branch was the first publicly-owned wastewater treatment operation in the nation to receive ISO 14001 Certification from the International Organization for Standardization in Geneva, Switzerland. ISO Certification provides structure for an environmental management system that ensures our commitment to regulatory compliance, pollution prevention and continual improvement.
In October 2000, that Certification was expanded to include all of the Wastewater Branch's treatment facilities as well as the City's major pump stations for their continuing commitment to ISO standards. In June 2002, Wastewater Branch's Environmental Monitoring and Technical Services Division became ISO 14001 Certified. This division provides all the chemical sampling of wastewater plus a vigorous ocean monitoring program. In December 2003, Wastewater Branch's Wastewater Collection Division earned its ISO Certification. This division operates over eighty collection pump stations and maintains nearly 3,000 miles of collection system piping.
This certification requires annual inspections to ensure continuous improvement and compliance to standards. The City's Wastewater Branch is one of the few national wastewater service providers to earn ISO certification.
