A Look Inside: From Navy Base to Urban Village
Reuse of the Naval Training Center (NTC) is intended to create a place surrounded by green landscaping, bordered by water, and centered on history. It is a place where San Diegans come together in an active, productive, and stimulating environment. To live at NTC means living as part of a traditional neighborhood; to work at NTC means working among a diversified group of educational, service, retail, and visitor-commercial businesses; and to visit NTC means experiencing parks, retail shops, museums, and an urban waterfront.
Demolition and deconstruction began on February 26, 2001, and a new identity was then launched for NTC as Liberty Station. The new name pays homage to the thousands of Navy personnel who were trained at NTC. The California Coastal Commission approved the NTC Precise Plan and Local Coastal Program in September 2001.
- Land Use of NTC: The land uses of NTC create specifically designated areas within the former base.
- Development Program Summary: This summary shows how much area each land use occupies at NTC.
- Urban Design Program: The configuration of streets, lighting, hardscape, site furniture, landscape, artifacts, architectural style and form are all governed and determined by urban design, the overall structure of which is based on plans for open space, circulation, and design character.
- Map of NTC Subareas: This map shows the breakdown of the NTC property by seven subareas with information describing each area.
