Learn to Swim Program Prerequisites

Answer the questions below to find out whether you are correctly placing your child in the appropriate class. If the answer is NO to one or more questions, place your child in the previous skill level. Only after choosing the appropriate class below, you can use online registration at SDRecConnect.com or to sign up for classes.

Ages 6 months - 2 years

  • Is the child at least six months of age?
  • Does the child have good head/neck control?
  • If the child is over age three, is there any reason why he/she cannot be enrolled in Tiny Tots?

Ages 3-5 years

Tiny Tots: Water Adjustment
  • Is this child at least three years old?
  • Is this child under six years old? If six years or older, see Level 1.
  • If this child is over three, under six, and has never taken lessons; this is the class for him/her.
Advanced Tots: Fundamental Skills
If you answer no to any of the questions below place your child in Tiny Tots.
  • Is this child over three but less than six years of age?
  • Is this child comfortable in the water and willing to follow directions without tears?
  • Can this child submerge his/her entire head and blow bubbles?
  • Can this child open his/her eyes under water to pick up an object without the use of goggles?
  • Can this child tummy float and back float with minimal help?
  • Can this child climb out of the pool without help?
Super Tots: Stroke Development
If you answer no to any of the questions below place your child in Advanced Tots.
  • Is this child over three but less than six years of age?
  • Can this child front glide and back glide with kicks at least 8 feet without help?
  • Can this child jump into chest deep water unassisted?
  • Can this child roll over from front float to back float, and back float to front float without assistance?
  • Does this child know the basics of flutter kicking on both front and back?
  • Can this child perform 5 yards of freestyle arm strokes (face in, arms out of water)?

Ages 6 and up

Level 1: Fundamental Skills
  • Is this child at least six years old? If younger than six, see Tiny Tots.
  • If this child is at least six years old and has never taken swim lessons, this is the class for him or her.
  • This class is designed for children with little or no experience in the water
Level 2: Stroke Development
If you answer no to any of the questions below place your child in Level 1.
  • Is this child at least six years old?
  • If younger than six, see Advanced Tots.
  • Can this child submerge his/her entire head and blow bubbles?
  • Can this child open his/her eyes under water to pick up an object without the use of goggles?
  • Can this child front float and back float without assistance for at least 15 seconds?
  • Can this child roll over from front float to back float, and back float to front float without assistance?
  • Can this child front and back glide without assistance?
  • Does this child know the basics of flutter kicking on both front and back?
  • Can this child perform 5 yards of freestyle arm strokes (face in, arms out of water)?
  • Can this child jump into chest deep water without assistance?
Level 3: Stroke Improvement
If you answer no to any of the questions below place your child in Level 2.
  • Is this child at least six years old?
  • If younger than six, see Super Tots.
  • Can this child front and back glide, incorporating kick, without assistance for at least 15 yards?
  • Can this child perform an effective freestyle stroke, incorporating proper side breathing, for at least 15 to 25 yards?
  • Can this child perform backstroke at least 15 yards?
  • Can this child change direction as well as turn over while swimming?
  • Does this child know the basics of elementary backstroke (arms and whip kick)?
  • Is this child comfortable in deep water?
Fitness Swimmer: Stroke Refinement
If you answer no to any of the questions below place your child in Level 3.
  • Is this child at least six years old?
  • If younger than six, see Super Tots.
  • Can this child effectively swim 25 yards of freestyle, incorporating proper side breathing?
  • Can this child effectively swim 25 yards of backstroke?
  • Can this child effectively swim 25 yards of elementary backstroke stroke?
  • Can this child tread water for at least 30 seconds?
  • Does this child know the basics of breaststroke (arms and whip kick)?
  • Does this child know the basics of butterfly (arms and dolphin kick)?
  • Can this child perform sitting and kneeling dives?
  • Could this child jump into deep water, then tread water for 30 seconds, then swim 25 yards?
