History of the Center
The 21.75 acre site was acquired in 1974 and dedicated in 1978. The playground was remodeled and dedicated in 2002. Several picnic tables and barbeque grills have been replaced and painted, and the horseshoe pit was renovated in 2008. Additionally, the recreation center has had many upgrades and additions over the past five years including new tile floors, gym floor and outdoor basketball court resurfacing, bathroom renovations, facility painting, gym scoreboard, window and shade replacements, and new furniture and equipment.
University Gardens Neighborhood Park has also seen its share of upgrades with the playground being remodeled and dedicated in 2004, as well as the addition of a comfort station that was built and opened in 2006.
Many of these renovations and additions were done with the team efforts of the Standley Park Recreation Council, City Services, Councilman Scott Peters and his staff, and Community Volunteers that dedicated their time and energy to envision, create, fundraise, and see through the completion of each project.
