Park Standards

The City General Plan establishes standards for public amenities based on population. The following standards apply to the placement and development of park and recreation facilities.

Population Ratio

  • Recommendation: Parks to Population Ratio - approximately 20 acres/1,000 people
    • Population Based: 2.8 acres
    • Resource Based/Open Space: 16.0 acres
    • Athletic Areas/Mini Parks: 1.6 acres

Neighborhood Parks

  • Neighborhood Park/3,500 - 5,000 residents within ½ mile radius
  • Size = 10 acres, reduced to 5 acres if located next to elementary school site where joint use is anticipated
  • Typical facilities: picnic areas, tot lot, multi-purpose courts, open turf areas

Community Parks

  • Community Park/18,000-25,000 within 1 ½ mile radius
  • Size = 20 acres, reduced to 13 acres if located next to junior high school site where joint use is anticipated
  • Typical facilities: much the same as neighborhood park, with lighted multipurpose sports field and recreation center building

Swimming Pools

  • 1 Swimming pool/50,000 residents within 1 ½ to 2 mile radius
