Parks

Balboa Park

Balboa Park includes 1100 acres and borders Uptown to the southeast. It has strong historical and cultural significance to the City as well as serving as the jewel in the region's park system and providing recreational opportunities to neighboring communities. Balboa Park includes the historic Prado, the Spanish Revival promenade built for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition that serves as home to many of the City's museums and cultural institutions. The Park also is home to two public golf courses, the world-famous San Diego Zoo, campgrounds for Boy and Girl Scouts, the Naval Hospital, the Veterans War Memorial, and the Morley Field recreational area.

For more information call (619) 641-6100 or visit www.balboapark.org/info.html

Presidio Park and Pioneer Park

Presidio Park is a 50-acre park characterized by steep hillsides. It is located south of Interstate 8 and is adjacent to the northwesterly portion of Uptown community. Presidio Park is not only lovely, with some scenic trails, it is also historically significant as the site of the first European settlement in California. The Junipero Serra Museum, built in 1929, commemorates the settlement, fort and mission originally erected there in 1769. Another Uptown park is Pioneer Park. The park has 10 acres, which is a gathering place for locals. The park used to be a cemetery, however most of the stones were removed, although some of the elaborate, 19th century monuments still exist. The names of the deceased are now inscribed on nearby plaques.

Parks: Information for all parks may be obtained by calling (619) 685-1300 or by visiting the Park and Recreation website: www.sandiego.gov/park-and-recreation/
