San Diego’s Outreach and Involvement Effort Receives Helen Putnam Award for Excellence in Planning
The City of San Diego’s Strategic Framework Element Public Outreach and Involvement Process won the League of California Cities prestigious 2003 California Cities Helen Putnam Award for Excellence in Planning & Environmental Quality. This innovative public outreach process ensured citizen input and feedback each step of the process in updating the City’s General Plan. The issues raised and alternatives discussed led to the citizen-developed "City of Villages" strategy that was adopted by the City Council in October 2002 as the preferred alternative for enhancing quality of life. In presenting the award to the Mayor and Planning Department staff, Chris McKenzie, Executive Director of the California League of Cities stated that San Diego's outreach effort is a model other cities throughout the country will follow when creating their public involvement strategies.
