Accident Investigations Unit

Accident Investigations Bureau is responsible for on-scene investigations of the following types of vehicle collisions:

  • Fatal or serious injury collisions
  • Collisions involving felony prosecution
  • City equipment collisions
  • Police equipment collisions

The Bureau is staffed 24 hours a day with officers who are Certified Collision Reconstructionists. While at the scene of these collisions, accident investigation officers document all forms of evidence, including roadway dimensions, skid data, initial contact location, witness statements, etc. Utilizing this evidence officers are able to determine the primary cause of a collision, determine who is at fault, and calculate the speed of the vehicles involved. A thorough report is then completed and forwarded to the Traffic Investigation Unit for additional investigation, if required.
