SAN DIEGO CHIEF OF POLICE WILLIAM LANSDOWNE ELECTED TREASURER OF PERF

(June 19, 2007, Washington, D.C.) - San Diego Chief of Police William M. Lansdowne has been elected treasurer of the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF), a Washington, D.C.-based membership organization of progressive police executives from the largest city, county and state law enforcement agencies. Chief Lansdowne will begin his two-year term on July 1.

"Chief Bill Lansdowne is known for his commitment to community policing and to innovations in reducing violence, and for his strong police management skills," said PERF President William Bratton, chief of police in Los Angeles. "We are fortunate that he will bring those talents to PERF at a time when police agencies across the nation are looking for strong leadership in getting the violent crime issue back on the list of the nation's top priorities."

PERF Executive Director Chuck Wexler added: "Bill Lansdowne and the San Diego Police Department have been longtime supporters of PERF, from their pioneering work developing the philosophy of problem-solving policing, to our more recent studies of police use of force-research that Chief Lansdowne suggested and encouraged. We look forward to continued collaboration as he joins the PERF board of directors."

Chief Lansdowne has served as chief in San Diego, the nation's seventh-largest city, since 2003. He began his law enforcement career in 1966 at the San Jose Police Department, where he rose steadily through the ranks, commanding a variety of units and divisions. In 1994 he was chosen to head the Police Department in Richmond, Calif., where he reorganized the department in order to place a stronger emphasis on community policing, violence reduction, and truancy programs. In 1998 he returned to San Jose to become chief of police there, and continued to focus on improving police-community relations and ensuring that the police are open to public scrutiny. Chief Lansdowne holds a bachelor's of science degree in criminal justice administration from San Jose State University, and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and other professional education.
