The City of San Diego Police Department (SDPD) has one of the largest specialized Domestic Violence Investigations Units of any major law enforcement agency in the United States. This unit, which was formed in August 1992, consists of nineteen detectives, three sergeants and ten to fifteen clerical support and volunteer personnel. Each person who works in this unit has requested the assignment, and each undergoes intensive training.

The Domestic Violence Unit is a part of the Family Protection Section of the Police Department, which originally included Child Abuse, Juvenile Administration, and the Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program (D.A.R.E.). Currently, the Family Protection Section is composed of Domestic Violence, Child Abuse, Juvenile Administration, D.A.R.E., and Sex Crimes Units. The overall goals of the Section are: to protect and maintain the family as a unit, and to break the cycle of family violence.
