San Diego Police Department Sex Crimes Unit

Professional Resources for Sexual Assault Response Teams

The San Diego Police Department Sex Crimes Unit has been nationally recognized for their contributions in the field of sexual assault. Due to a constant battle for resources, few police agencies across the country have dedicated Sex Crimes Units to this day. The San Diego Police Department recognized the need for a specialized unit over 30 years ago. A dedicated team of detectives assigned to the Homicide Unit were first assigned to address sexual assault crimes between 1970 and 1971. At that time, the Homicide Unit handled homicides, attempted homicides, domestic violence, and sexual assaults. In 1978, a dedicated Sex Crimes Unit was formed with three detectives. Today, the Unit has two sergeants and thirteen detectives who investigate approximately 1,000 reported sexual assaults each year. The Sex Crimes Unit receives many calls for resources and assistance. The following information has been provided to assist organizations responding to Sexual Violence.
