The San Diego Police Department maintains a DUI Enforcement Team. The team's goal is to reduce the collisions involving alcohol and narcotics. The team's main function is the detection and apprehension of drivers who are suspected of driving while under the influence of alcohol or narcotics. All of the officers on this team have received additional training on the detection and apprehension of DUI drivers.
One of the tools that the DUI Team uses to accomplish its goal is the use of sobriety checkpoints. These checkpoints are designed to raise awareness and educate the public regarding the hazards of driving while impaired. DUI checkpoints are set up at various locations around the City of San Diego throughout the year.
The DUI Team works closely with MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) and other law enforcement agencies throughout the County to impact the problem of impaired drivers.
