Mayor Murphy and Host Committee Officially Kick Off
Countdown to Super Bowl XXXVII


SAN DIEGO - Mayor Dick Murphy was joined by the San Diego Super Bowl Host Committee and local business leaders today to officially kick off the six month countdown to Super Bowl XXXVII in San Diego. A glimpse into San Diego’s game plan for hosting the big game on January 26, 2003, at Qualcomm Stadium was unveiled.

San Diego Unveiling of NFL Super Bowl Logo: San Diego Mayor Dick Murphy and Super Bowl XXXVII Host Committee Chairman Ron Fowler unveiled the NFL’s official Super Bowl XXXVII logo, featuring the historic Point Loma lighthouse. This marked the local unveiling of the NFL’s Super Bowl XXXVII logo, which along with the Host Committee logo will be the focal point for the city as the game approaches.

Site Selection of NFL Experience: San Diego Port Commission Chairman, Steve Cushman and the NFL announced that the NFL Experience will be held at the Campbell Shipyard property and Embarcadero Marina Park South. The site promises to be the most beautiful location ever for an NFL Experience. Tentative dates for the interactive football theme park are January 18-19 and January 23-26.

Business Development: Super Bowl XXXVII Host Committee Chairman Ron Fowler reported that local companies are responding enthusiastically to a business development program designed to help business owners bid successfully on Super Bowl-related contracts. The Emerging Business Program – a joint effort between the Host Committee and the Chamber of Commerce – has held "emerging business opportunity seminars" for approximately 700 companies to date. The program focuses on helping local companies maintain long-term business relationships following the Super Bowl. Volunteers Needed: Fowler also issued a "call for volunteers" to participate in events surrounding Super Bowl week. In all, the Host Committee will need approximately 10,000 volunteers to serve as airport and hotel greeters and work at the NFL Experience and other NFL and Host Committee events and activities. Web Site Is Super Bowl Information Clearinghouse: In addition, Fowler announced that residents can find virtually everything they need to know about the Super Bowl at The site includes information on special events, volunteer opportunities, business development seminars, and other activities related to Super Bowl XXXVII.

Sanctioned Events: Fowler also announced that local groups have until August 31, 2002, to apply to have their events sanctioned as official Super Bowl XXXVII Host Committee events. Qualifying events will receive limited use of the Host Committee logo for marketing purposes, and designation as an "official sanctioned event of the San Diego Super Bowl Host Committee." Speakers Bureau: Finally, Fowler announced the formation of a Super Bowl Speakers Bureau, which will make presentations to local organizations throughout San Diego County leading up to the game. The program’s goal is to keep local residents informed, excited, and engaged with the activities associated with Super Bowl XXXVII.
