Library to Play Active Role in Statewide Program
Featuring John Steinbeck’s "The Grapes of Wrath"

City Library to Present More Than 40 Events as Part of Program

SAN DIEGO - The City of San Diego Library will present more than 40 events as part of "California Stories: Reading ‘The Grapes of Wrath,’" a statewide program designed to strengthen California communities by bringing people together to read John Steinbeck's classic novel, discuss parallels between the book and today's issues, and share stories about their experiences as Californians. The City Library is one of 180 libraries in California participating in the program.

"The ‘California Stories’ program is an exciting opportunity for libraries across the state," said City Library Director Anna Tatar. "The San Diego Library has a great variety of events in store that will have people talking, thinking and learning."

Films, scholarly discussions and musical events are among the activities planned at the Central Library and six of the City’s branch libraries from Sept. 28 through Oct. 28. In addition, two special exhibits will be displayed at the Central Library in conjunction with the program. A complete schedule is available at all City libraries and on the City’s web site (www.sandiego.gov) by clicking on "Community" and choosing "News and Events."

"California Stories: Reading ‘The Grapes of Wrath’" is a project of the California Council for the Humanities in partnership with the California Center for the Book. It is supported in part by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and technology Act, administered in California by the State librarian, and by Penguin Books. Additional support for this event is made possible through contributions to the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress from AT&T and the Carnegie Corporation of America.
