October Disability Awareness Month
SCHEDULE OF LOCAL ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS
OCTOBER 5 (11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.)
Puppy Raiser's Appreciation Lunch
Guide Dog Users of San Diego will hold their 12th annual Puppy Raiser's Appreciation Lunch at the Blind Community Center, 1805 Upas Street. The event will include a delicious lunch prepared by the Rancho Santee Lions Club, a panel discussion with puppy raisers from all three California schools about their duties and experiences as puppy raisers.
OCTOBER 5
"Pride & Passion: Building Potential for Women with Disabilities" Conference
Sponsored by SHARP Healthcare Rehabilitation Services, a conference will be held at Mission Valley Hilton, 901 Camino del Rio South, that addresses what possibilities are available to women with disabilities.
OCTOBER 7
3rd Annual "Take on a Disability Day"
City officials will take on a disability for the day with assistance from staff of San Diego disability organizations. The activity helps City employees and the general public understand the types of barriers experienced by people with disabilities every day. OCTOBER 8 (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.)
"Jobtoberfest 2002"
An Employment Fair for persons with disabilities will be held at the Balboa Park Club Building. Call Julie Hecht at (619) 276-8910 for more information.
OCTOBER 12 (1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.)
Register of Voters
A demonstration of accessible voting machines for persons with disabilities will be held at the Blind Community Center. Contact Sharlene Ornelas at (619) 298-5021 for more information.
OCTOBER 16
"Disability Mentoring Day"
High school students with disabilities will work with City personnel and local businesses to learn about career possibilities. For more information contact Louis Frick at (619) 293-3500.
OCTOBER 19
Descriptive Video
A movie with no dialogue will be shown at the Blind Community Center to people who cannot see. Each scene will be explained through descriptive language. For more information, contact Sharlene Ornelas at (619) 298-5979.
OCTOBER 19 (12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.)
Town Hall Meeting
A Town Hall meeting will be held discussing accessible/affordable housing. The meeting will be located at the Blind Community Center Auditorium. Contact John Johnson at (619) 594-3841 for more information.
Additional Training
The City will also offer a limited amount of training to local businesses and members of the public upon request and is gearing up to provide additional training for City employees. Contact Linda Woodbury, (619) 236-5979
