City Refunds $359,000 in Twice-Paid Parking Citations
Now Seeks to Return $80,000 of Undeliverable and Unclaimed Refunds
Individuals and Businesses Due Refunds Listed on City's Web Site
SAN DIEGO, CA - After refunding $359,000 in parking citations that were paid twice, the City of San Diego is now seeking individuals and businesses with more than $80,000 in refunds due that remain unclaimed. Registered owners who think these refund checks belong to them can view the City's website to see if their names are on a list of payees.
In February 2003, the City sent out 7,842 refund checks totaling $439,000 for the overpayment of parking citations; 1,455 totaling $80,000 were undeliverable. DMV records were searched to determine a current address of the registered owners. As a result, those remaining registered owners that could not be located via DMV record searches have been posted on the City's website for potential claimants. The list will remain on the City's website until December 2005.
Registered owners who find their name on the list should, complete the Proof of Claim Form on the site and submit it, along with all requested supporting documentation, to the address indicated on the form. Once the information is validated, a refund check will be mailed to the claimant at the address listed on the claim form.
The parking citation refunds are the result of the United States District Court, Southern District of California approved a settlement requiring the City of San Diego to send a refund check to those persons who overpaid parking citations between March 1, 1998, and June 30, 2001.
Registered owners without internet access can obtain information by calling 619-685-1435.
