City Launches Comprehensive Web Page to Help Citizens Access Information on Affordable Housing Programs and Initiatives

SAN DIEGO - Comprehensive information on affordable housing in the City of San Diego is just a mouse click away with the launch of the City's new web page that combines available programs and efforts by City agencies and departments to tackle the affordable housing crisis.

The new web page provides information and links to available affordable housing, rental, rehabilitation and first-time homebuyer programs and incentives for developers to create more affordable housing. Citizens can reach the new page by going to the City's home page at www.sandiego.gov and clicking on "Community," then "Affordable Housing."

Visitors to the site will find programs operated by the San Diego Housing Commission, the Redevelopment Agency (comprised of the City's Community and Economic Development Department, Centre City Development Corporation and the Southeastern Economic Development Corporation), the Development Services and Planning departments, and various other partner organizations involved in making affordable housing a reality for more San Diegans. Additionally, the site features information on new policies and initiatives to tackle the affordable housing crisis with new revenue sources, fast-tracked permitting and other key policies that are designed to increase the production of new affordable housing units Citywide.

"The City of San Diego realizes the severity of the affordable housing crisis and we are pursuing this challenge by developing a variety of new programs and resources," said City Manager P. Lamont Ewell. "This new web page provides a comprehensive listing of the City's affordable housing programs and initiatives and we hope it will make it easier for citizens and developers to tap into available programs."

The San Diego region is experiencing an affordable housing crisis, which is being exacerbated by supply and demand issues among other factors. The San Diego City Council has declared an affordable housing state of emergency and has approved several sweeping measures to encourage the development of new affordable housing in the City. Since 1992, the City has facilitated the creation of more than 13,000 affordable housing units. An additional 1,700 units are in the pipeline due to ongoing efforts and the creation of innovative new programs to help fund more housing.
