Kelco Donates $50,000 for the Logan Heights Library

SAN DIEGO - The CP Kelco Company has donated $50,000 to the Friends of the Logan Heights Library, to support the new San Diego Public Library branch that is being built in Logan Heights. The check presentation ceremony will be held on Tuesday, April 19, at 2:30 p.m. on the lawn of the Logan Heights Branch Library, located at 811 S. 28th St. This event is FREE and open to the public.

The CP Kelco plant has operated in Barrio Logan since 1943. Kelco has established partnerships with several local schools and community agencies, with an emphasis on science and health education. Kelco's Tony Gomes has said that improving the Logan Heights Library's collections is another way of supporting science and health awareness throughout the community.

The check will be presented by CP Kelco's Corporate Vice-President of Public Relations Bob Currie, Kelco San Diego's Plant Manager Andrew Currie, and Kelco San Diego's Material Supervisor Tony Gomes. The donation will be accepted by Friends of the Logan Heights Branch Library President Jaime Diez and Secretary Connie Zuniga.

The current Logan Heights Branch Library was constructed in 1927. Measuring only 3,967 square feet, it is one of the smallest branches in the San Diego Public Library system, but sees heavy usage each day by local students. The new Logan Heights Branch Library is scheduled to begin construction on the same city block in December 2005, opening in 2007. It will sit on Logan Elementary School's grounds, and will be adjacent to Memorial Academy Middle School. At approximately 25,000 square feet, the new branch will be six times larger than the current facility, and the number of the books available in the branch is expected to grow from about 40,700 to approximately 73,000.
