Board of Library Commissioners
About the Board
The Board of Library Commissioners consists of seven members appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council. Each member serves a two-year term. The Board is responsible for considering all policy matters regarding the development and operation of the City's Library system and serves in an advisory capacity to the Mayor and City Council. Each member serves until reappointment or until a successor is appointed.

Board Members, Brief Biographies
Salvatore Giametta, Chair
Sal Giametta is Chief of Staff in the San Diego County Board of Supervisors Fourth District, and is responsible
for the overall management and day to day operations of that office. Previously, Mr. Giametta was Vice President
of Public Affairs & Communications for the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau (ConVis). He was primarily
responsible for media, community government relations. Widely recognized for his extensive contributions to
San Diego's visitor industry, Mr. Giametta is the 2008 recipient of the San Diego County Hotel-Motel
Association's prestigious Gold Key Award. Prior to joining ConVis in December of 1992, Mr. Giametta served as
a top aide in the Mayor's office. Mr. Giametta has served on the boards of the Downtown San Diego Partnership,
Little Italy Association, San Diego Workforce Partnership, San Diego Film Commission, Cabrillo National Monument
Association and the San Diego Press Club. The 2004 recipient of the San Diego Press Club's award for outstanding
contributions in the field of public relations, Mr. Giametta is a San Diego native and a graduate of San Diego
State University where he double-majored in Journalism and Political Science.
Susan Atkins
Ms. Atkins is chair and senior counselor of Porter Novelli Life Sciences and is a member of the
executive committee of the BIOCOM board of directors. She founded Atkins + Associates in the
late 1990s and sold the company to Porter Novelli. Ms. Atkins was director of communications for Genetech,
and she has served as a corporate officer and vice president of communications for Ligand Pharmaceuticals
and Rorer Group. She was also group vice president of Ketchum Public Relations. She founded Middle Earth
Day Care Center in Oklahoma and was a member of LEAD Tulsa as well as LEAD San Diego. While living in
Philadelphia she was involved in its citywide adult literacy program. Ms. Atkins holds a B.A. in
journalism and an M.A. in mass communications from the University of Oklahoma, and an MBA from Pepperdine
University. She lives in Point Loma.
Ann Haddad
Ann Haddad, a native San Diegan, is a homemaker and community volunteer. Her professional experience includes
Director of Community Relations and Events at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies as well as a director in
the philanthropy department at The San Diego Foundation. From 1986 through 2001, Mrs. Haddad worked in
Washington, D.C., including 10 years in the field of international development as well as several years in
orchestra management and consumer banking. She has served as a chair for several charity galas including
Promises2Kids Summer Concert Gala, American Cancer Society's (ACS) San Diego Discovery Gala, and Huntington
Disease Society of America (HDSA) / San Diego Chapter Celebration of Hope. Her board experience includes the
ACS Gala Team for California, HDSA / San Diego Chapter, the Kraemer Endowment Foundation, and the Junior League
of Washington, D.C. She is currently a gubernatorial appointee to the Board of Governors of the San Diego River
Conservancy. Mrs. Haddad holds a B.A. in Music from Smith College and an M.A. in International Relations from
Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies. She is a 2005 LEAD San Diego graduate.
She and her husband, Ben, reside in Point Loma.
Katie Sullivan
A Scripps Ranch resident, Ms. Sullivan was president of the Friends of the San Diego Public Library and
previously served as the organization's vice president. In 2000, she was recognized as volunteer of the
year by the City of San Diego Public Library. Ms. Sullivan was also president of the Scripps Miramar
Ranch Branch Friends of the Library. She holds a bachelor's degree and a teaching credential from Illinois
State University.
Abby Silverman Weiss
Abby Silverman Weiss is a Mediator, Arbitrator and Consultant, specializing in employment and
employment-related business disputes. After 20 years as a partner of Baker & McKenzie LLP, in July
2009, she retired from the firm to start this practice built on her experience as a trial lawyer
including commercial and employment litigation and dispute resolution, and counseling on the employment
law. Ms. Silverman serves as a trustee of Scripps Health. She is chairman of the Human Resources and
Compensation Committee, and is an Advisory Board member of the Scripps Translational Science Institute.
She was the 2000 recipient of the University of San Diego School of Law Distinguished Alumnae Award, and
the 2000 Recipient of the Tribute to Women in Industry Award. Ms. Silverman received her J.D. degree
from the University of San Diego School of Law, her M.S.W. degree from Bryn Mawr College, and her B.A.
degree from Wellesley College.
Sarah White
Ms. White is the former Director of Qualcomm's corporate library where she was responsible for its
establishment and direction for fourteen years. She has served on the boards of Mama's Kitchen and the
Hamilton-White Foundation. Nationally, she has served on the IEEE Library Advisory Council and has
held various positions with Special Libraries Association. Ms. White holds a bachelor's degree in
zoology from UC Davis and a Masters in Library and Information Science from UC Berkeley. She is a
resident of San Diego.
Alan Ziegaus
Alan Ziegaus is president/partner of Southwest Strategies, LLC., and has over 30 years of experience in
the field of public affairs and public relations. Mr. Ziegaus has been a resident of San Diego for 56
years and currently resides in downtown San Diego. He served for nine years on the San Diego County
Planning Commission, five years on the City of San Diego's Civil Service Commission, and four years on
the Centre City San Diego Planning Committee. Mr. Ziegaus holds a bachelor's degree in journalism from
San Diego State University.
Board Meetings
Board of Library Commission meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month at 9 a.m. in the Commission Room, located on the third floor of the Central Library. The Board may alter the meeting dates and the place of meeting as needed. Agendas and Board meetings are listed in our Calendar of Events.
