"Page and Stage: The Power of the Iliad Today," is a ground breaking, in-depth partnership between the San Diego Public Library and the Aquila Theatre in New York, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The events are designed to inspire people to come together to read, see, and think about classical literature and how it continues to influence and invigorate American cultural life.

Participate in a classical theatre workshop with actors from Aquila Theatre Company of New York.

Performance

Aquila Theatre presents Homer's Iliad: Book One
This is a live performance with a post-performance discussion. The acclaimed Aquila Theatre, is New York's classically trained, modernly hip troupe, dedicated to bringing classical theatre to underserved communities nationwide. Their innovative interpretation of Homer's timeless work premiered at Lincoln Center and was hailed by the New York Times as "a performance of staggering power...stunning, stirring and memorable." A discussion with the actors and a local scholar, will follow the performance.

Scholar Lecture

Dr. Anthony Edwards, professor of Greek and Latin Literature at the University of California at San Diego, will deliver a lecture on Homer's influence on classical literature, keyed into the program theme the thematic unit "Know Thyself: Issues of Identity."

    A public lecture on How Achilles Knows Himself: Heroic Self-Identity will be delivered by Anthony Edwards, Professor of Classics and Comparative Literature, University of California San Diego. This lecture is part of a free program series presented by Page and Stage, an in-depth partnership between the library and the Aquila Theatre sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Reading Groups/Film Series

Our local scholar, Dr. Anthony Edwards will facilitate a discussion on the Iliad. Page and Stage has provided twenty sets of these books to add to the library's collection. Another more contemporary novel will also be discussed as part of this series. Two film discussions that incorporate the theme of the project will be screened.

Copies of The Iliad are available for checkout at the Literature Desk in the Central Library or you may place a HOLD online with your library account and PIN to have a copy sent to any branch.

Dr. Eliot Wirshbo will lead a discussion of Achilles in Vietnam: combat trauma and the undoing of character by Jonathan Shay.

Charles Chamberlain will screen and talk about the film Platoon as it relates to the Iliad.

Display

A display with books accompanied by Page and Stage posters and flyers will be created to engage patrons in some of the books/materials behind the program.

About the Program Scholar

Anthony Edwards, Professor of Greek and Latin Literature
University of California at San Diego
Anthony Edwards was trained at the University of Utah (BA in Latin and MA in Classics) and at Cornell University (PhD Classics). He has taught at the University of Michigan and at UCSD, and enjoyed a year as junior fellow at the Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, D.C. Edwards' most important publications are his books Achilles in the Odyssey: Ideologies of Heroism in the Homeric Epic (Meisenheim 1985) and Hesiod's Ascra (UC Press 2004). He has also published articles on Greek epic and comedy. His current research projects focus on the geography of countryside and city in the literature of the Archaic and Classical periods in ancient Greece and on the figure of the kolax (the toady, brownnoser) in Classical Athens. Edwards has been an avid fan and supporter of Peter Meineck's work for close to two decades.
