This
Subject Internet & Technology session will help you learn how
to search the Internet for antiques, collectibles, collectors and appraisers
by using search engines, auction houses, auction malls and resource directories.
A major part of the workshop was presented as a PowerPoint presentation,
which is online and linked below. Below are links to the PowerPoint presentation
used in the workshop, and following, selected Web sites and resources
about antiques and collectibles.
As a reminder, SDPL provides access to newspaper
and magazine databases (ProQuest, EBSCOhost, and New York
Times Archive, for example) which may contain information about antiques
and collectibles. You can use these databases in our Central and Branch
Libraries.

"A major source for buying, selling, finding and appraising fine
art. The 'Fine Art Auction Database,' a fee-based subscription, provides
auction records for the past 10 years for nearly 2 million lots from over
500 auction houses. Free membership allows bidding items arranged by type

AskART
Extensive information about 28,000 American artists.
Auctions Sources
Butterfields
Includes full descriptions of upcoming auctions. Useful descriptions about
bidding and auction terms for beginners.
Christie's
The second-largest auction house in the world offers detailed information
on auctions, special features on upcoming auction items, a virtual term
of their Paris premises, and articles from their magazine Living with
Art.
eBay
"eBay is a personal online trading site, divided into more than 2,900
categories with over 3.5 million new auctions, and 400,000 new items every
day. Particularly useful to collectors is the 'Library,' which contains
background articles and possible future trends in a dozen areas."-InfoPeople.org
Sotheby's
The world's largest auction house offers catalogs of their past and current
auctions, an online bookstore, collectors' guides for several categories
of antiques and collectibles, and special online auctions.

Kovels' Online
"Kovels', one of the premiere printed price guide sources, has compiled
the information from five of its price lists into one fully searchable
database. Price quotes require registration (free)."-InfoPeople.org

American Society of Appraisers
This international society of professional valuers is committed to fostering
professional excellence in its membership through education, accreditation,
publication and other services. The site offers free searches for appraisal
experts by specialty, surname, city or state.

An easy-to-use interface allows basic or advanced searches of items for
sale or auction, including some top quality merchandise.
Internet Auction List
"This online auction search service contains nearly six million items
offered by nearly 2,000 auction company firms worldwide, and online services
including such sites as Auctions.com, AmazonAuctions, CNET, Gold's, uBid
& Yahoo! Auctions. Search by brand or manufacturer's name, product
