Presented by
Vic Cardell, Art, Music & Recreation
San Diego Public Library
Today's presentation focuses on finding music information on the
World Wide Web--music ratings, recordings, sheet music, song
lyrics, and radio play lists. Clicking on the links below will
bring you to the web sites being covered in the class.
There are additional links that will not be covered in
today's class, but are offered to give you a better sense
of the wide range of music information that is available
on the Internet.
Today's class is one of a series of Internet workshops
offered by the Central Library of the San Diego Public
Library. Information about other classes and events is
available at the San Diego Public Library web site.
Class Links
Ratings:All Music Guide Example: Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
The All Music Guide is a good starting point to find music ratings. You can search by names
of performers, albums, songs, music styles, or label. Entries typically contain a rating
of one to five stars, information about individual album tracks, biographical data about
the artists, and direct links to cdnow for buying CDs.
Recordings:Amazon Example: God Bless America, sung by Kate Smith
Amazon’s web site allows you to purchase recorded classical and popular music. You can browse new releases, listen to
excerpts, view personalized recommendations for purchase, and create your own wish list.
Sheet Music: Pepper Music Network Example: Vocal score for Puccini’s Tosca
The Pepper Music Network is great for people who need printed music for performing popular or classical
music. You can browse listings of new releases, from elementary music resources, to collections of songs
that match your favorite CDs.
Lyrics: Lyrics Dot Example: Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit
Lyrics Dot has a database of words to about 85,000 songs, mostly popular. If you can’t find a
song in their database, you can search the Internet using the search engine Alta Vista, right
from the Lyrics Dot web site.
Radio Playlists:San Diego Radio Guide from Yahoo! Example:
KPBS Scandinavian strings
Several radio stations have their own web site, from which you can sometimes listen to their live programs.
Some stations also publish lists of the music that they play.
Encyclopedia: available only at Central Library
The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, 2nd ed., was recently published in both a
printed edition (Reference 780.3/NEW) and an online version that is available at the Central
Library. It includes articles about all aspects of music, with extensive bibliographies and
images of musicians, musical instruments, musical examples, etc. Special features such as the
current article on music censorship in Afghanistan are regularly mounted.
