Communicating

With the advent of the Internet, computers became excellent communication devices. Today computer-based communication programs range in complexity from basic text e-mail to online video conferencing. Your child will most likely learn to use e-mail, but may also be required to master more advanced computing skills.

Select a question below to learn more about communication. Use the navigation to the left to learn about other general technology uses.

Will my child be required to have an e-mail account?

San Diego Unified School District's Course of Study, K-12, states, "Exploring Computers 6th-8th" covers the basics of computers, including ethics, vocabulary, hardware, and software…Telecommunications (i.e., Internet and electronic mail) will be another component of the class." http://www2.sandi.net/course/pdf/CompEd.pdf

If your child is going to use e-mail, he or she will need to have an e-mail account. It depends on the individual school if students are required to have an account. If they are required, the school may set up an account for your child so he or she can receive e-mail messages that they can access in the classroom or in their school's computer lab.
