Word Processing

Your children may come into contact with computers in their individual classrooms, a computer center in their school, in their school library, or in their neighborhood public library.

Select a question below to learn more about word processing. Use the navigation to the left to learn about other general technology uses.

What skills do my children need to word process?

States, local school districts, and professional associations are attempting to describe what are called "student technology competencies" that students are expected to acquire in school. Word processing is often one of the technology competency areas. Here are some examples of technology competency descriptions:

National Educational Technology Standards for Students

This is one of the best sites to see what is expected of students in word processing and other technology and information literacy competencies.

The Technology Applications Center for Educator Development

This site contains samples of technology competency by grade level in school districts in the State of Texas.
