Technology Hardware

Young students looking through books in the library. "Hardware" is the name for the physical devices that are used in order to accomplish various tasks. "Software" is the name for the code or programs that a piece of electronics hardware runs in order to perform those tasks. Hardware and software are used together to get things done. Whereas you can physically interact with hardware—you can insert disks, push buttons, move speakers around, etc.—you only interact with software at the abstract level of words, symbols, and pictures. A program like Microsoft Word would be an example of software.

The desktop computer—with its keyboard, monitor, and CPU—is probably the best known piece of electronics hardware that your child will work with at school. However, other forms of technology, such as PDAs, CD/DVD players, and MP3 players also are starting to appear in educational environments.
