Original inhabitants, now called the San Dieguito, settled at least as early as 9000 B.C. The Diegueño or Kumeyaay Indians arrived about 1000 B.C. and mixed with the Dieguito.

European discovery: Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, looking for a northwest passage, discovered San Diego Bay on Sept. 28, 1542, naming it San Miguel. Don Sebastian Vizcaino entered on Nov. 10, 1602 and renamed the bay San Diego de Alcala. California territory is claimed by Spain.

1769 - Father Junipero Serra establishes the Mission San Diego de Alcala, moved to its present site in 1774.

1821 - Mexico wins independence from Spain. San Diego is part of Mexico.

1847 - Mexico defeated in the U.S.-Mexican war. California ceded to the U.S. and admitted as a state in 1850.

1867 - Alonzo Horton buys property at site of current downtown and begins to establish New San Diego.
