$31.1 Million Recovery Funding Allocated to California Coastal Restoration Projects; $2.9 Million Directly to San Diego

June 30, 2009 - Of the total $167 million in Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding for 50 wetlands, fisheries, and habitat restoration projects, California has received $31.1 million for nine California coastal restoration projects. From this amount, San Diego has been awarded $2.9 million to help restore South San Diego Bay through the California State Coastal Conservancy. The funding will create an estimated 42 job-years to restore tidal circulation to former salt ponds, restore intertidal wetlands, as well as remove non-native vegetation and replace it with native estuarine plants. Furthermore, California Coastal Fisheries Restoration Partnership will receive $1.5 million to restore an identified 20 sites throughout the coast of California. San Diego Region Gets $10.5 Million from Stimulus Funds to Create up to 3,200 Summer Jobs for Youngsters

April 27, 2009 - San Diego County has received nearly $10.5 million in ARRA funds to support a “2009 Hire-A-Youth Summer Employment Program” creating nearly 3,200 temporary work assignments for youth ages 14 to 24. The regional job training agency, the San Diego Workforce Partnership, says employment opportunities will available at local city, county, non-profit and businesses in areas such as service, technology, environmental preservation, medicine, recreation and more. The jobs will start May 1st and run through September 30th, where most jobs will be paid at minimum wage of $8.25 per hour. San Diego Unified is among the First Districts in the Nation to Take Advantage of Interest-Free Federal Construction Bonds

April 22, 2009 - San Diego schools are expected to receive high-tech renovations, such as wireless internet and other upgrades, through interest-free federal construction bonds. Under the federal stimulus package, $38 million in qualified school construction bonds are available for bidding. The recent passage of Proposition S (November 2008) and the District's top credit rating helped the District's participation in the federal bond program. Southwest Fisheries Science Center is expected to Receive Stimulus Funds for New Complex and Vessel

April 10, 2009 - Southwest Fisheries Science Center (SWFSC), located in La Jolla, is expected to receive $102 million from stimulus funds. The funds will be used towards building a new complex and vessel, advancing SWFSC's technological resources. SWFSC, one of six hubs nationwide, analyzes the ocean and atmosphere, providing resourceful ecological research and assessments to the nation. Additionally, Southwest Fisheries Science Center produces a magnitude of information that is used to help policymakers manage and conserve sea creatures and marine mammals. Hundreds of New Jobs to Support Military Construction Spree

April 4, 2009 - The Naval Facilities Engineering Command Southwest has estimated that San Diego military construction projects will receive $758 million from the federal stimulus bill. Nearly 80% of the employees hired for these projects will be in San Diego. Of the projects included in the construction spree, is a hospital at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.
