Our Mission Statement"To provide a safe city street system through effective and efficient maintenance, with an emphasis on exceptional customer service." Conserve-A-Tree Nomination Form (PDF: 216K) We Go that Extra Mile . . .San Diego is the seventh largest city in the country and growing. The challenge of maintaining the City's streets and structures is growing right along with it. Street Division maintains over ...
We rely on technology to project and plan for future maintenance. We also utilize innovative tools and techniques to do our job more efficiently and cost-effectively. Our primary line of defense is our "eyes on the street", residents who help us identify what needs repair. Anyone can report a street or structure repair 24 hours a day, seven days a week by calling (619) 527-7500 or by using our online Service Request system. Street Division is divided into six sections:Information Technology & Engineering Systems, our inventory management section catalogs and tracks everything from work completed to the exact number of trees in the right of way. Using state of the art GIS systems and software co-designed by us, we can analyze the condition of streets slated for repair and even use global positioning to track our street sweepers. Our system is routinely used as a model for other agencies and municipalities such as NASA, the City of Phoenix, Ocean County, New Jersey and the Marin County Water District. Electrical is responsible for over 1,500 traffic signals and over 40,000 street lights in the City, as well as sharing the maintenance of lights on the freeway off/on ramps that intersect city streets. In this era of high-energy costs our Electrical Section strives to find ways to operate as economically as possible including using lower wattage bulbs that give the same amount of light and converting signal lights to LED. Roadways is responsible for alleys, bridges, curbs, gutters, dirt roads, potholes, sidewalks, street resurfacing and slurry sealing. Contractors perform most resurfacing on City streets, and City crews perform other repairs as necessary. Street Division inspects and evaluates contractors' work to assure it meets with City codes and standards. Storm Drains cover a wide array of duties including fences, channels, drain structures, and street sweeping. The Street Division's maintenance activities must also protect our parks and rivers. Our environmental office ensures maintenance activities are permitted to avoid sensitive areas during endangered species breeding seasons, use best management practices to control urban run off from polluting our streams, and to protect environmentally sensitive lands. You can check our Storm Drain FAQ's page for common questions or even check your sweeping schedule online. Traffic Control installs and maintains traffic signs and street name blades throughout the City. They are also responsible for all curb painting, pavement legends and striping. With over 53,000 street name blades and traffic signs the job is a tough one. We use the latest and most effective products to produce signs that will repel graffiti and resist fading. Currently, Traffic Control is in the process of replacing the old green street name blades with larger, more colorful blue and gold signs. The new signage is not only more attractive but easier to read as well. Urban Forestry plants and maintains trees in the right-of-way. San Diego currently has an inventory of over 200,000 City-owned trees, qualifying it for the prestigious Tree City USA designation. However, we have a long way to go. Working with the Community Forest Advisory Board, the Urban Forestry section is reaching and contributing to the goal of planting 5,000 trees a year for the next 20 years. We use creative and cost efficient ways to protect the sidewalks and other hardscapes in the City. For more information on our Urban Forestry program check our Solutions to Tree Problems and to help choose a tree take a look at our downloadable Tree Selection Guide (PDF:33K). Urban Forestry also provides 24-hour emergency response to alleviate or secure any hazardous condition of the alleys, sidewalks, trees, storm drain structures, street lights and signs.
