Rancho Bernardo Reservoir Rehabilitation

Background

After more than forty years in service the 10 million-gallon drinking water storage reservoir is slated for improvements. Located at 16055 Big Springs Way in the Rancho Bernardo community, the reservoir was originally constructed in1964 to provide water to the Rancho Bernardo area. The upgrades will comply with a mandate from the Department of Health Services and increase the reliability of the local water system.

Project Improvements

Structural

Seismic retrofitting of the columns and beams, maintenance and repair of cracks in walls, replacement of the original roof, and installation of a new liner on the reservoir floor.

Mechanical

Improvements to piping and plumbing, installation of a chlorine analyzer, chlorination lines, sampling stations and access hatch and drain replacement.

Corrosion Control

A cathodic protection system will be installed to prevent future corrosion.

Site

Improvements will include replacement of the chain link fence and a new irrigation system.

Project Overview

Cost

The construction cost for the reservoir rehabilitation is estimated at $6.7 million.

Schedule

The project is scheduled to begin in the Spring of 2008 and will take approximately 10 months to complete.

Benefit

Improvements to the Rancho Bernardo Reservoir will extend its service life, bring the reservoir into building code compliance, and increase local water reliability.
