San Carlos Reservoir Rehabilitation Project

Project Description

Photo of San Carlos water reservoir rehabilitationThe San Carlos Reservoir has been completely rehabilitated and is currently in service. The reservoir is located above ground near the intersection of Wingspan and Tommy Drive in the San Carlos area of San Diego. This reservoir, built in 1965, holds 5 million gallons of drinking water.

Construction Start: October 2000

Construction Complete: Fall 2001

Project Benefits

The rehabilitation and upgrade to the San Carlos Reservoir increased the reliability of the structure and the local water system. In addition, the seismic retrofit provides increased water reliability in case of an earthquake. To facilitate this improvement project, the Water Department utilized other water storage in the area to maintain water service to the area during times of construction when the existing reservoir needed to be taken out of service.

The San Carlos Reservoir is one component of an overall improvement program for the City of San Diego Water System. Other improvements in the San Carlos area include the Del Cerro Highlands Water Pump Station and the Deerfield Water Pump Station.

Project Need

The Water Department upgraded the reservoir to install new seismic retrofit technology and improve the interior and exterior coatings of the tank. In addition access to the facility was improved as was the paving around the reservoir. The rehabilitation project began in October of 2000, and was completed in winter of 2001.

Estimated Project Cost: $25 million
