Water and Engineering Departments Host Student Job Shadow Event
SAN DIEGO - The City of San Diego Water and Engineering and Capital Projects Departments are hosting a two-day job shadow event in partnership with the Lincoln Professional Development Academy for the Medical Sciences at City offices on March 15 and 16.
More than 50 local high school students studying algebra will visit the two departments to learn first hand about careers with the City in fields ranging from civil engineering, data collection and information systems, budget analysis, administration, safety, and project management. In addition to learning about the City's water and sewer infrastructure, the students will observe demonstrations of current computer technology and be provided with information about jobs with the City. "We held a very successful event on National Job Shadow Day where we had 25 chemistry students tour the Alvarado Water Treatment Plant and conduct sample experiments with staff from our Water Quality Lab," said Mark Stone, Water Department Deputy Director.
The program is supported by Deputy Mayor George Stevens, who represents the Lincoln area . "I am very pleased that these two City Departments have taken the initiative to establish educational outreach opportunities with our students and the community," said Stevens.
Job Shadow Days and related events are part of a nationwide effort to introduce young people to the world of work by giving them a up-close look at the workplace. In 2000, more than one million young people and 75,000 businesses participated in events around the country.
