RECENT PIPELINE BREAKS UNDERSCORE NEED FOR CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS PROGRAM

San Diego, CA - A recent water pipeline break and related shut-down to make repairs caused water outages in South Bay for up to 2 days. The City of San Diego Water Department responded immediately following the incident and shut-down the pipeline. The impact of this recent water outage was heightened since a single 40-year-old pipeline currently serves the South Bay.

This recent water outage further underscores the importance of the Water Department's Capital Improvements Program taking place in South Bay. The Water Department is currently installing the South San Diego Pipeline No. 2 in the Otay Mesa-Nestor, Otay Mesa, and San Ysidro areas. This new pipeline is part of an overall infrastructure upgrade to the existing water system in South Bay.

This new 11.6 mile-long South San Diego Pipeline No. 2 will provide a much needed second transmission pipeline which will provide greater system reliability through pipeline redundancy, increased pressure to the San Ysidro community, and additional capacity to accommodate future growth. Construction began in December of 1998 and is scheduled to be complete in the summer of 2002. The total estimated project cost is approximately $27 million.

If you should have any questions about this project, or the Water Department's Capital Improvements Program, please call the Public Information Line at (619) 533-4679 or www.sandiego.gov/water.
